An inspirational story of survival and transformation, White Shadows profiles Dalee Henderson, a famed celebrity hairstylist who is diagnosed with AIDS and must reconcile himself to the changes the disease affects upon his body and mind. A gay, African-American man raised in the rural, segregated South of the 1950s, Dalee escaped to the West Coast to live life openly and proudly, arriving in Los Angeles in the late ‘70s, where he achieved great professional and personal success, amassing a wealth of friends by virtue of his gregarious nature. His life changed when he learned of his HIV status, but his spirit and hope remain despite the deterioration of his body.

Narrated by aspiring journalist, Chadwick Williams, as he pursues research while authoring a book about MSM (Men who Sleep with Men) aka The Down Low, we enter into a provocative and intriguing world of sexual discovery, denial, betrayal, love and loss.
Episode: Wes introduces us to Wes Thomas, an upwardly mobile real estate banker who is overwhelmed by the demands of his marriage, career, and closeted attraction to men. When Wes sexy but ambivalent brother-in-law stops in for an unexpected stay, he is directly faced with temptation and ultimately falls for the forbidden fruit.

Spoken word artist Kenneth Morrison dedicates this poem to his friend Devon, who committed suicide at age 13. Filmed in Washington DC as part of a protest against the exclusion of LGBT African Americans from the Millions More movement.

Featuring searing public performances and raw, revealing interviews with the community’s most significant players, the film captures an unapologetic underground music movement just as it explodes into the mainstream - defying the music industry's most homophobic genre in the process.PICK UP THE MIC features more than a dozen contemporary hip-hop artists, representing a striking range of sexual and ethnic diversity. Shot over a three-year period, the film traces their intertwining relationships from San Francisco’s underground music scene of the early ‘90s through performances as recent as 2005. It was recorded in such major cities as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, but breaks down coastal stereotypes by also covering performers in such diverse areas as Houston, Minneapolis, and Madison, Wisconsin – and a particularly memorable outdoor gig in the Ozarks. The artists are followed rehearsing, performing, and struggling – always revealing their raw, most intimate feelings, including experiences with homophobia, gender identification issues, and suicide.

Reverend Willie Wilson is a former civil rights leader, mayoral candidate, and executive director of Louis Farrakhan's Millions More movement. On July 4th weekend 2005, he delivered a graphic sermon at Union Temple Baptist church about the dangers of teenage lesbianism and anal sex. The response from the community was shock and anger. This short film contrasts Reverend Wilson's own words with the voices of a female illusionist and a motivational speaker.

It tells the story of a young man, Ty Evans, coming to terms with his sexuality and the inner conflict he experiences. The true extent of Ty’s relationship with his classmate, Kevin Banks, begins to trouble him when the boys get into a schoolyard shoving match. As the tension between them escalates, Ty realizes what began as innocent curiosity and experimentation has blossomed into something deeper.

Paris Is Burning continues. As a follow up to the 1990 Miramax documentary film Paris is Burning on New York transgender and gay Ball culture, How Do I Look continues where Paris is Burning left off. Since 1997, director Wolfgang Busch and company has been documenting the "Balls", where the "Old School" and the "New School Legends" are competing in a safe and artistic environment at locations such as Harlem, the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn. The "children", members of the "Houses", compete for trophies and cash prizes, representing their "House" to become a "Legend" one day. "Old School" meets "New School", and surprise?they all can get along! How Do I Look is a New York organization that serves as an artistic community empowerment project sending strong HIV/AIDS awareness messages through screenings, lectures, politicians, AIDS & community based organizations and the media. |
