Tim’m West, Monte J. Wolfe, Erik Chambers |
For several years now, Black America has been bombarded with media about the Down Low Phenomenon-- creating a circus of attention on the lifestyles of black men who love men, though often without representation by those of who live their lives openly and without shame. Brave Soul Collective is a national collective of brothas celebrating the "up high"-- the honoring, exhaltation, and celebration of brave souls who are "out", visible, and gatekeepers in not just same gender loving communities, but in the Black community at large. This workshop is not about vilifying the "Down Low" but questioning its romanticization and placement as a preferred way to be a black man who loves men (e.g., from personal ad profiles, to social networks). Brave Soul Collective makes it debut in Atlanta to help "Bring Light to the Truth." Are you ready to flip the switch? |

| No Fats? No Fems? Gay Men and Body Image |
Ulester Douglas |
We see the signs everywhere, from the mostly muscled bodies in our magazines and promotional materials, to personal ads and online profiles. Are brothas just pursuing what they like? Or are they perpetuating discrimination in our communities? Can we not help the things that arouse us, even if it’s the very thing that oppresses us? Are they engaged in sexual freedom? Or are they practicing “sexual apartheid?” Should we be striving for the “perfect” gym body, or should we love ourselves and each other in all the shapes and sized we come in? These questions and more will be explored in this workshop. |
