Action Alert: Tell the NBA to Address Homophobia

(February 15, 2007– Atlanta, GA) –In the wake of homophobic remarks made by former NBA player Tim Hardaway on Wednesday, regarding last week’s announcement that another former player, John Ameachi is gay, NBA Commissioner David Stern removed Hardaway from league-related appearances in which he is currently involved. Hardaway had been taking part in NBA festivities ahead of Sunday’s All-Star Game in Las Vegas and attended an NBA Cares outreach event at a city YMCA on Tuesday.

“It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours,” Stern said in a statement to the South Florida Sun- Sentinel.

Write to Commissioner Stern and let him know that, not only should Hardaway not be allowed to participate in All-Star Weekend activities, but the NBA no longer needs his services as a representative in any future capacity.v

Furthermore, let Stern and National Basketball Players Association Executive Director G. William Hunter know that the NBA needs to institute a permanent, on-going, league-wide awareness program to educate all players, coaches, general managers and owners about diversity as it relates to sexual orientation.
