In The Life Atlanta denounces recent hate based attacks in Atlanta

(October 31, 2006 – Atlanta, GA) – In The Life Atlanta, Inc. (ITLA) denounces the recent attacks on African American men in Atlanta and calls on the State, City, and local residents to push for stronger laws that protect victims’ rights and provide for stiffer punishment for hate based crimes.

“With the increasing negative campaign towards LGBT and SGL people in our country, incidents of violent physical and verbal attacks directed towards people because of their sexual orientation or perception thereof are on the rise nationwide. Atlanta is no exception and we can not afford to ignore the fact that our brothers and sisters are regularly targets of other people’s fears, anger, and aggression,” said Michael Slaughter, ITLA Board Member.

As part of an on going effort to address this issue in our community, ITLA intends to work with the Atlanta Police Department, along with the management and residents of the GE Towers, to ensure that people feel safe in their place of residence. “It is important that we as a community organization work with our law enforcement agencies to ensure that members of our community are protected,” said Kenneth T. Jones, ITLA Board President. “We will ensure that residents of GE Towers, and elsewhere, have the tools and resources to effectively report suspicious activities or crimes. We are sending a message to would be attackers that we will not tolerate this in our community.”
